Re: 68-69 patrol in Tucson
No and looking at some other carburetor posts on here, I think it could possibly be the accelerator pump. The float and needle valve move freely so they seem ok and Ive blown out every hole in the carb and there’s nothing blocking. I think I may end up getting a new carburetor when the funds allow it so just at a standstill on the motor for now. I have to reshape the hard top anyway, as it looks like whoever owned and drove this decades ago drove under a tree or something and crunched it so that will keep me plenty occupied

This carb kit includes the accelerator pump: https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/hy ... 123A&pos=0 . I had two Rochester carbs rebuilt with this kit, they worked great.

I assume the "no" at the start of this post was in response to my question of whether the fuel bowl was filling up. If you are not getting any fuel into the carb fuel bowl, then you have a problem with the float/needle/seat, or the line between the fuel pump and carb is plugged. (BTW, the accelerator pump will not work if there is no fuel in the fuel bowl.) You said the fuel pump was pumping fine, so the issue has to be downstream of that.69patroller wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 10:51 am No and looking at some other carburetor posts on here, I think it could possibly be the accelerator pump. I've never messed with these Rochester carbs (my Patrol has the Hitachi carb), but from the pictures you posted that include the carb, they show a bowl vent. Use a small squeeze bottle to fill the fuel bowl via the fuel bowl vent, and see if the engine will run off the carb then. (Of course, it will only run until the fuel in the fuel bowl is consumed, but at least if the engine does run off the fuel in the bowl you will know the carb is ok.)

Sorry. Yes the no was regarding fuel getting into the fuel bowl. I’ll try putting some fuel into the fuel bowl vent and see how that goes.

Thanks river, think I might give that kit a try and see if getting new internal parts will help. I have no idea how long this patrol was sitting before I got it so this may help a lotRiverPatrol wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 11:39 am This carb kit includes the accelerator pump: https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/hy ... 123A&pos=0 . Greetings,
When you have checked everything else it was my experience the Rochester carb never worked properly until you run than copper line from the distributor to the air filter housing.
Is that line in place?

Re: 68-69 patrol in Tucson
So the air filter housing was not with the vehicle when I purchased it. Not sure what happened to it so that’ll be something I get a little later on. However, I think I figured out part of the problem, the main vacuum line was completely blocked. Got that cleared out and that seems to be helping the issue with the carb not pumping gas. When I do start it, it does run now if I keep the gas pedal pumping, but It’s still having trouble starting without adding fuel directly into the carb. I’ve been toying with the distributor and changing where the spark plug wires connect but it still doesn’t want to idle. One question I have is where does the line from the vacuum advance connect to?

Here are some more pictures of the engine bay. Is there anything wrongly configured? I’m currently hotwiring to start so that’s why I have the wire from the coil to the alternator. Will delve into the wiring once I get the engine running

Your plug wires are not routed correctly, and the vacuum line coming over the top of the valve cover needs to be connected to the vacuum advance on the distributor. Here is how it should look.
