The ground cable is an added security, since the plate is physically grounded, but greased on the bearing places. A ground cable will be easy to fabricate, but you have to find a good flexible cable that allows free movement of the base under the vacuum advance action. In the mean time, try it without it.

This isn't the kit I just installed, I didn't take pictures of that one. I'm really bad about taking pictures of projects. This is the original kit that Pertronix made when I took them this distributor to make one from. The kit I just installed was one of the original ones and it did have the ground strap. They might have done that because the original distributor was set up with a ground strap with the points installed. I have purchased a current kit recently and I don't recall there being a ground strap. The mounting plate also looks different.

It started right up after buttoning everything up but it is misfiring pretty bad. It'll stall under any load so I gotta diagnose that problem and fix that.

Did you check the timing? That actually sounds like carb issues.

would that be the adjuster screw?

First, check if the timing is correct. Might be overly retarded.

The adjusting screw only affects the idle performance, so probably not the cause.

If it stalls after you try to give it some throttle, the accelerator pump of the carb might be mal functioning.

according to post 2 of this thread, the forklift dist doesn't just drop in place of a water protect dist without shifting the gear some.
Guess I'll just have to tear into it and find out. my vac advance is shot, and the plate is not moving either, so its gotta be replaced.
