Need pics of P40 for comparison to diesel
I need a picture of the back of a P40 (patrol) engine where it attaches to the bellhousing. I have recently aquired an sd33 engine out of an international scout. I have a sneaking suspicion that this engine is very similar to the original patrol engine. I don't have any good pictures of my patrols original engine, and since it is in the car I don't want to take it out and see if it matches my newly aquired diesel. If the two engines will interchange I believe I will someday attempt to convert one of my patrols to a turbodiesel. Anyways if any of you could get me a picture of a dismounted P engine, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank

Can't wait to hear how the conversion goes, I have been thinking about that exact conversion for sometime, had a long talk with a guy about how it would work, and what I got out of him is you would need to use the tranny that came with the sd33 and since the location of the output is different, you would have to change everything else underneath too, not that there is anything wrong with Scout stuff. I'll see if I still have that e-mail from him.

Here are some pictures of my "P" engine/transmission. I can get some shots of the bell housing if that will help. 026 is the rear of the block on its' side, 028 is the front of the tranny on its' side. the distance between the two top holes is about 8 3/4 inches. My camera is somehat crappy, let me know how they look. Keep me posted on your progress with this idea. This engine is toast and I would love to switch to diesel. What year scout is your diesel from?Rick GAttachment: Dsc0028.jpg

Thanks alot for the pictures Rick. I will compare them with my sd33 tomarrow and see if they look similar. I have wondered for a while how similar these two engines are. The P40 was used in the MQ patrols as was the sd33. If you've ever been to marks 4wd, all the kits they sell for MQ's have the P40 and sd33 models listed together. That is I think the same kit is used for both setups. That lead me to believe that these engines would be similar. I am hoping that Alex is wrong, but that is not often the case. I am probably not going to attempt this conversion anytime soon. The engine I got is of a 1980 scout and is turbo ready. The only problem is that some guy put gas in this engine and cracked the pistons. I will have to get an 900 dollar rebuild kit to overhaul the thing. I think eventually I will try this as I will be out of college here soon and will have more money to spend on those sort of things. In the meantime I will find out how to get the diesel in my patrol and read up on rebuilding diesel engines. Thanks again for the pics,; ; Dave Straus

Okay, here's the lowdown of the SD633 use in Scouts. year number of scouts made with SD633 engine1976 1,6021977 1,0381978 1,0451979 537 1979 1,108 already equipped with turbo!!!!!!!!!1980 10,182 I didn't save my old e-mails so I have e-mailed Steve McClintock about what he discovered in his attempts to do the conversion and am waiting for a reply. It could have been that he couldn't use his Patrol tranny because it was bad, not that it didn't fit, you never know, so believe me, I can be and often am wrong! I would however not spend the $900 for the rebuild on the blown motor, for less than that money you could find yourself another motor already in working order, or even a complete running Scout! Keep me posted, Alex.

Well I compared the pics that Rick gave me to that of my sd33. Well, the sd33 does look quite similar to the P engine. The bottom of the block kind of flares out just like the P. I won't know for sure until I can get my other patrol apart and see if the bellhousing will actually bolt to the sd33. I am thinking that it probably won't be that simple. I figure if it was that easy, then somebody would have done it long ago. I can still be hopeful though. If it does work, then someday I will have a bad ass diesel patrol that also hopefully has a five speed! I can dream can't I? Anyways thanks for all the information everyone.

The common thing to do in Australia was to convert 60 series Patrols to the SD33 or SD33T motors. The kicker is that MQ Patrols that had these power plants were in are easier to find. In the Mark's cataloge they list the P40 and SD33 together because in the 80's they used the same 5 speed tranny. The 1980's version of the P40 in the MQ is different to the one in the 60. The bell housings were different, the manifold, water pump, carb and air cleaner set up and a few other minor things. I think the only way to match up your motor is to have an adaptor made up or contact Mark's to see if they have an adaptor for the SD33 to the original 3 speed tranny. Also it may pay to see if you can source an MQ Diesel out of Canada and use the tranny and transfer out of it as they have off set outputs. Let me know if I can be of any more help. The Duck.

FYI, Canada never got the Patrol. I talked to a Nissan dealer there and they told me Patrols were never imported to Canada and that the U.S. got all the fun stuff, ya, right, then where's my HZJ77 Land Cruiser? If people want an MQ motor try Steve K. http://www.owens-export.com he has already imported and resold one with the tranny and transfer case complete.
