Transmission Noises

Really old stuff that got saved. Here are the old Nissan Patrol Club America messages from the 'General' category. Warning, it's dusty in here!

Transmission Noises

Post by npca-aussie »

I read the other day that some guys are worried about noise in their trannys. Patrols will make noise under load in first and second but should be quiet in third. If you are still getting noise it may be your bearings are going out especially the needle rollers on the countershaft in the transfer case as they tend to pit and go out of round and take the hardening of the countershaft and gear. Another problem that seems to go overlooked is the main shaft retaining nut. Remove the cover on the back of the transfer case where the trasmission main shaft comes out (careful as this housing has needle rollers and they may drop into the transfer) and you will see a big nut. This nut is held tight by a tab washer that may break the tabs allowing the nut to back off thus the gear will run crooked causing noise or worse it will bind up locking up your transfer and tranny. Check it out. The Duck.
