Ignition-compatible incompatible!

In the Compatible Parts topic Borg Warner points and condenser part numbers are identified as compatible. During a tuneup this week I tried them. The condenser is the wrong physical size and mounting clamp requires modification. Not sure if its capacity, measured in microfarads, was the same as stock. The points, although looking the same as stock would not fit on the peg which they slide onto. Forcing them caused them to bind on the peg and the point spring couldn't overcome the tolerance intolerance by the forcing function. I ruined them when trying to remove them Bought another set and found the same problem. Expensive learning experience. Parts manuals at Auto Stores may show things as compatible, but until they are physically tried, they probably shouldn't be listed in the Compatible Parts section of this site.Hope my experience saves someone else the bad investment.

Good point Joel. What did you find that is compatable. So far,  the compatable parts list has been accurate.

Joel: Sorry about that. I have removed the Borg Warner reference from the Compatible Parts List. Thanks for the updated information. Do let us know what worked for you. Then, add it to the list!Steve

I didn't explore the other compatibles on the list. Instead I filed mine and replaced them. I'll probably go to Nissan to make sure I get the "right stuff". The other compatibles may be OK, but I'd like to hear from someone who actually used them to avoid the problem I ran into. ; ; Also dismantled the distributor and cleaned it while I was in the mood. Had trouble adjusting gap due to sloppy breakerplate. Remembered someone, Steve McClintock?, who suggested shimming. I tried it and it seems OK now.

I must have deleted something else Borg Warner by mistake. The points are now gone from the list.
