I'm not surprised that it won't fit... Just kinda surprised to see anything listed as fitting!

On another note -- I just dropped off rear axle bearings and seals to the diff shop. The 50x73x12 seals are spot on -- Not as cool as the now-impossible-to-get factory seals, but completely functional.

Sean took a look at the new carrier bearings and, as expected, the new 32209 bearings are different from the original carrier bearings (also marked 32209). There is a step on the side of the stock bearings that isn't on the modern 32209s. No measurements taken, but Sean says that assuming the ID and OD are correct, the new bearings may work by adding some additional shims where the step on the old bearing is. He'll decide whether to use the new carrier bearings with that bonus shim or the the old bearings as he puts it together. I'll report back on it when I pick it up. -- would be kinda useful to find a functional work around on that impossible bearing!

I actually have a contact within NSK that keeps telling me that the "JX" suffix is still a good number but I haven't followed up on it yet. May need to make a minimum production run quantity to get them.

As far as the shims it's very close to 0.125" difference in width and the width difference is in the cup and not the cone. The cones are the same. I do have the drawings and have made the shims for the cups before. If you need I can make them for you but I'm a bit backlogged. Others just shim the cone and that works too.

Guess Amayama is out, just check and it says they are out of production. I might have gotten some of the last ones when I ordered some for the axles last year. I have seen the locker pop up on ebay in the past but it was priced better at $365.

I ended up using shims manufactured by Ratech, since I didn't have a way to manufacture the shim as you did.

I ordered a set of the #1146 set
Outside diam: 3.23" = 82.04mm
Inside diam: 2.60" = 66.04mm

The bearing cap has an o.d. of 85.00mm

I used the following shim thickness on each side: .057" + .010" + .057" = 0.124" (close enough to the 0.125" you used)

To keep the slightly smaller diameter of the shims centered, I glued them with instant glue to the bearing cap. The use of these shims also allowed me to play with the backlash a little bit, without taking the bearing out of the carrier every time. Between the cone and the carrier I used the same shims that came out. I did four iterations and ended up with equal thickness on both sides as it should be expected.

Once again, I have to give thanks to Coyote Patrol for his incredible guidance. I sent him the contact patterns and he made suggestions, until I finally had it good. That was 8 years ago I've driven about 7k miles since.

Aerogirl's front axle assembly appears to be in very good condition (especially with that new coat of paint!), so I don't think I need to have the diff looked at. But since I need to remove the drum backing plates to make way for caliper brackets, some of it obviously has to come apart. My plan is to take the hubs and steering balls off, clean them up, degrease & re-grease and replace just the two seals and the two O-rings by the steering bearings.

So, rather than risk breaking something on the good front axle, I spent the evening tearing apart of of the two front axle hubs and steering ball... Interesting stuff! Lots of pieces and parts... every one of them greasy gooey! I probably went through a half roll of paper towels semi-cleaning them!


Inner and outer wheel hub bearings... one is clearly labeled 30209 and the other one seems to be 18370 -- if you look closely. I'm probably wrong on that second number!


And the outer axle bearing - clearly labeled 305


And the rear hub seal -- there's nothing legible on it at all! The steering ball wiper seal is 40529-44000

Still a little confused on the steering bearings -- One fell off when I was removing it from the axle. The other won't budge. I supposed on aerogirl's, I'll fully remove them , then maybe it will be more obvious how they come apart.

The swivel kit includes all the seals, o-rings and bearings, except wheel bearings, that you need there. I have some extra kits if you need.
