Puzzle Time - 69 Locking Up When Braking in Reverse?

Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

*update*

Well...
After cleaning and adjusting the brakes seemed to be working ok. They still wanted to lock up a bit in reverse on the rear passenger side, but forward was perfectly fine.

Then it all went horribly wrong.
Me and my dad test drove around the block to see if the brakes were staying open and working at least while going forward, so that tomorrow we could take it to a shop.
Half way through the drive the brakes completely failed.
I managed to turn the patrol uphill and then coasted into a valley between two roads. We then drove it home with my parents car acting as brakes. Judging by the large amount of fluid we dropped on the road coming from the rear passenger brake, I can only assume the cylinder broke and we lost all pressure.

So after that scary ordeal I will be calling around to see if someone can do a complete overhaul of the brake system. It has traumatized me enough to just want it all professionally done.

Of course I worry about part availability, so if anyone has suggestions beyond ebay please let me know so I can either get them ordered for the shop or they can order.

Thanks and be safe! Haha

Ebay is pretty much the only source for brake rebuild stuff I'm pretty sure.

Question for you all,

Does 4wd Products just take a while to respond? I messaged through ebay and emailed them 3 days ago and have not heard anything. I just want to make sure I get the correct fit on these parts.

Alternatively, does anyone here know if this fits the US Patrols?

Never had anyone complain about them not responding, maybe it's an eBay thing.

Those are definitely the right parts for the US Patrol.

Please be aware that you'll need to change the fittings in your brake lines to metric, since the cylinders will be with metric threads (Nissan switched to metric in the Patrol around 1978)

Not necessarily. Many members have used these cylinders and not had to change the fittings. It says they are for '67 - 77, so that was before the metric change.

You guys are so awsome, thank you for all the help so far. Without this forum I don't think restoring these things would be possible for many.

I'm about to order all the brake parts as well as a few other parts just to have spares, I hate to ask, but did they combine shipping for you guys or was each shipping fee on each item added together. Seems like it should be a bit lower since your combining shipping...

They'll combine shipping, you just have to request it. That's a common eBay function.

{sigh}.... yeah. Consequences of a 60+ year old single hydraulic circuit brake system design.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY don't like it. :x
