No synchro in first gear
I'm having trouble getting into first gear from second or third. The only way to get into first that I know of is to come to a complete stop. Coming and going from school is alright but getting into town can get tricky. Any info on how to get into first while moving would be very helpful. Thanks Jeff

I'll give you a bit of info, unless you got extra transmiissions lying around, you might want to stop before going into 1ST gear, trans wasn't designed for highway use stop n go so 1st has no syncro- ring neither dose reverse.

>>1st has no syncro- ring neither dose reverse Is that true? Huh? Well I guess my trans is not in as bad of shape as I thought it was. In that when I come to a complete stop and go from 2nd to 1st, or if at a stop and go from nutral to 1st it grinds sometimes.... Which would be the case if no syncro.... Right? Grant

that's right just like a big truck trans. you can get pretty good at timing when it will go in without grinding other than that you must come to a pretty much full stop to put her in. 1st.

; ; ; ; With my Jonga it is a must sometimes to; shift to third while in motion, especially when climbing uphill. This is due to; the fact that the ratios are hopelessly unmatched for the diesel engine. The best; procedure to protect the Nissan 3-speed is to double de-clutch as it used to be; done with old vehicles. This way those ancient synchros get a break and your; tranny goes for a long time.; ; ; ; -----Original Message-----; From: Grant; [mailto:grantsenn@yahoo.com] ; Sent: Monday, September 23, 2002; 08:40; To: Nissan Patrol Club Albuquerque; Subject: Re: No synchro in first; gear; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; New; Message on Nissan; Patrol Club Albuquerque; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; No synchro in; first gear; ; ; ; ; Reply; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; Reply to Sender Recommend; ; ; ; Message 4 in; Discussion ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; From: Grant; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; >>1st has no syncro- ring neither dose; reverse; ; ; ; ; ; Is that true? So, let me make sure I understand you... Im at a complete stop! And say Im in neutral, or 2nd and I go to 1st.... It should make a grinding noise?? I didnt expet that! I could maybe understand it if I was still moving a bit... but I am at a complete stop, and it still grinds.... Is that to be expected? Grant

I am not sure, as I don't know that much about Patrols yet, but there are indeed trucks like that-those that have the old gears that are not "knicked" off on one corner to make them go into gear easier (spurred? can't remember which is a spurred gear and which isn't!). If you get an old WWII era military big truck a lot of them do it. I am not sure, and have never been told what "Double-clutching" is, but the best way I have always dealt with these rigs is to fully depress the clutch pedal, move the shift lever to where you can just barely feel in your hand that they are starting to "grind" together, and then begin to release the clutch pedal slowly until you feel the "opening" that will present itself, allowing the shifter to slide into place and the vehicle to slide into gear.Still is doing about the same thing, but slightly more gently!!!Michael_________________________________________________________________Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

Ah, ok, thanks bigpupss.... I have heard of double clutching... but to be honest, I allways thought it was more for when your moving... but I guess it makes sense for sitting still too... I have done what you described on other cars, pull a bit on the stick and it will slide in... but at that time I was just matching the speed and leaving the clutch alone.. I know in day so old, pre syncro, double clutching was the way, my grand pa talked about it on the old old trucks... so, if it is true an the PATROL does not have a syncro for 1st... Then I guess this is to be expected... I just didnt expect it on a car this new.... Huh... That is the fist time I have ever refered to the PATROL as new! Grant
