vacuum advance

got my patrol running down the street with the clutch freed up finally .. lots of crowbar and wd-40 and releasing the pressure plate from the flywheel ... slave is new but lines are still leaking some .. brakes and clutch.. worry bout that later.. .. having trouble with pickup.. runs good at idle.. checked the accelerator pump.. seems to be working fine..( i hope so .. i rebuilt the carb) but i do believe its the timing and the vaccum pump not working .. took dist. cap off and the breaker plate is sorta frozen (rusted) and the vaccum pump does like nothing.. mechanic friend said .. those things dont work lots a times.. so he just advances the timing and idles down the carb.. and plugs the vacuum advance.. i cant seem to find one anyways.. seems like one was available a couple a weeks ago but not now.. go figure.. anyone else done that trick with the timing and blown off the vaccum advance... these parts are sure getting scarce.. went to the forklift place and they have a manual on the p-40 engine and get parts .but seems like they are running out of parts too.. cant determine for sure .. but a lot of parts seem similiar like the fuel pump .. if you got a nissan forklift dealer around and they stock parts it might be a source for some accessory parts that work.. anyone gone with electronic ignition kit.. they told me it was 150 bucks for the kit for the forklifts.. (distributer look the same except they were not water protect.. may end up going this route .. dist.. cost 2-3 hundred bucks.. i like it old but not expensive..

My 69 has some sort of electronic ignition instead of the normal points set up. It was that way when I bought the Patrol. Haven't really looked at it close to figure out what it is. I just know it's not points. I'll try to take a closer look at it. Keith

Hey bjoseph! Say, when you say vaccum pump... are you talking about the vacum advance? Reason I ask is you can still get those from NISSAN. There was a post here just a few weeks back that gave all the part numbers for all the different types, two if I remember, one was for the reg and the other for water proof, only dif I think was the water proof one had threads on it where the metal line screws on (ie water proof), and the reg was just a slip on tube for the typical rubber hose. Im real interested in that fork lift shop... Do you have a number for them? And, is there anyway you can get some kind of number off their parts book? Or, can they order one for you (ie us), if so, how much because I would be willing to pay to get my hands on one of those!!! Grant

Here are the numbers I have for the ASSY-VACUUM CONTROL. There apears to be two types, ONE the vacuum line is rubber and just slips onto the vacuum advance conector, TWO the vacuum *line* that is metal and screws onto the vacume advance conector. grant , thanks for the response....http://www.nissanforklift.com/ is the site that i found the company in my home town jackson ms.. industrial equiptment inc. on hwy 80. they are all over the country (dealer search) they offered to order a manual for me on the engine.. or give me one if they could find an old one.. they have some parts from the of accessories that appear to work.. from comparing my patrol parts book and theirs.. looks like anything that bolts up to the firewall will work .. what was real interesting was the air cleaner.. the oil bath filter can on my patrol looks just like the air filter on the forklift .. but they use a paper filter insert in it.. i may order that just to see if it is a true retrofit.. my next step was to ask them if there were any forklifts around that i could look at and did not have much luck with that .. the points they had in stock 22145-89901 is a good number and think it crosses with the 22145-5000 they looked similar.. as far as the vacuum advance i have been on the phone with peggy jones.. at nissanautoparts.com .. she is super nice and real helpful.. she said the vacuum advance was NLA but she was going to do a search and let me know tomorrow.. i guess in summary .. we should not only been looking at parts patrols but parts forklifts and parts streetsweepers.. i would imagine you could pull and engine out of one of these units and use them in a patrol.. bolt up... what do you think.. i am sure there are more of the forklifts out there than patrols...lol. he said they made them until 1986.. so thats about 17 years newer than the 69 model patrol.. probably used the g60 parts or something.. ..if they find an engine manual for the p-40 i will run it off and send you a copy.. bill

Hey Bill! Yeah peggy is the best! Basically the PATROL part search is a two step proces. First, type in the part number at nissanautoparts web sight to see if the part number is even active anymore... if it isnt, search is over, if it is, there is a chance that nissan still has some in stock. Which is the next step that the likes of peggy can do, they do a search to see if anyone has it on the shelf anywhere. I just got 12 valve springs from them... took about two months to get them though! I think they came from japan? Anyway, during the rebuild of my PATROL's "P" engine I learned that it is very simular to the forklift's "P-40" but not exact! I do belive that the bell housing will bolt up no prob, but, I *think*, not sure, but think the engine mounts are in a different place. There are many internal parts that are different! Which made the engine rebuild take months longer then expected! And cost much more! That is I had to get some parts from AUS!! That air cleaner thing is very interesting! Would be cool to get a stock looking one that has a paper filter!! And that copy of the "P-40" manual! That would great!! You mentioned that they can still order one if they dont find and old one? If so, let me know, I would love to order one too! Anyway, take care and thanks for all the info! Keep us posted! Unisversal City Nissan has the vacuum advance for $34.95 plus $5 shipping to anywhere in the country. The number is 818-769-8100. Talk to Mark in parts. It is in Los Angeles California. patrolman they also have all the other ignition stuff.

In that you can get the same part from Nissan Auto Parts for $20.00. And they are willing to ship anywhere too! Oh, and if you mention that your a memeber from *this* club you get a discount!!! Say Guys,It's nice to see some one else finally made the forklift connection. Now here's the kicker for ya'. Next time your talking to your nissan lift truck parts guy, ask him if he has parts and engine manual info for the PPU-240. It's a heavy duty fork lift made buy nissan that may stillbe in production, at least according to the guy at my local dealer. The thing about the PPU-240 is that it uses the P engine and not the P40 engine and is apparently still being produced some where in the U.S. They wouldn't tell me where, don't know why,people can be funny like that up here. However the gasket kit I got from them matched every thing exactly and the engine and parts manuals they had were definately different from theirmanuals for the units using the P40 engine. The only thing to be wary of is the prices of some of this stuff. Don't expect it to be cheaper just because it's comming from a forklift dealer instead of a car dealer. You may be in for a bit of a shock.Scooter
