Really old stuff that got saved. Here are the old Nissan Patrol Club America messages from the 'General' category. Warning, it's dusty in here!

Good analysis Grant...   What if the top to the oil bath is missing though? It looks like it could have made a watertight seal fairly easily with bolt down through top, ect. I still think it is "cold weather" gear but maybe someone moved this oil bath, adapted it or something for a snorkel. Only reason I say this is that like pointed out, the air intake is pointed rear, right at the air vent in hood. The rectangular intake looks like it would be a good fit with a rectangular hose for both the oil bath intake and the hood air vent. It is pretty much not happening to have a snorkel with stock oil bath, converted no probs but....this set up is the only stock looking thing I have ever seen that would be easy to adapt a snorkel to....It kind of looks like the heater had welding on it where the intake is, possibly so it could be turned on it's side to allow clearance for the snorkel? Anyways....intresting subject.

  >>What if the top to the oil bath is missing though?   It defintally is, in that david noted   >>The top is not on it so you can see the base >>module is different   >>It looks like it could have made a watertight seal fairly >>easily with bolt down through top, ect.   Emmm true, but when it comes to water tight "easy" is not what one looks for, a diameter of that size would req somthing around the edge, in that torq it down at the center like this one does (and ours) would leave the edges... well not so tight. Unless his top cover is very diferent then ours... maybe a pic of it would help here. But looking at the carb, and the seal around the base of the air cleaner I dont see any "good" areas to be water tight. For a dia of that size, I would have expected to see some sort of seal around the edge of that base.. looking at it it is pretty dirty, no sigh of something messing with it tightly (ie shinny metal, or at least clear paint). As for cold weather, such a tight seal is not required, that is why Im betting that his top cover (not shown in pic) is the same as ours, only the base (show in pic) is different.   >>The rectangular intake looks like it would be a >>good fit with a rectangular hose for both the oil >>bath intake and the hood air vent   True, visualizing a rectangular hose/pipe comming off of that it looks like it would fit through that gap... But, again, "rectangular" is difacult to make a good seal on... that is assume you have a clamp around that hose... the more tighter you make it... it would pull down hard on the 4 corners of the rectangle... but the areas inbetween would be looser. Thus for a good water tight seal I would have expected to see a round connection, in that as you tighten it up, it would apply the pressure (ie tightness) evenly making a good seal. Again, for cold weather a seal that tight would not be necessary.   So, the more I think about it, the more it looks to be for cold weather, maybe smog... but I just dont see it working for a water tight situation.   Grant

Oh, I was thinking this but forgot to say it. Around the big diameter of the base I would have expected to see some clamps to pull down around the perimeter of the base to make a nice tight seal... along with some evdance of something making a tight seal, as I noted before, look at the pic... it is dirty around the edge, no sight of to services comming toghter tightly... Oh, and notice around the edge that wet look... that is from the oil splashing up on the dirt... if oil can splash out... water can get in!   Grant

Just to clarify, the top of the oil bath is not missing. I took it off a while back to use on my 68. It's identical to the one on my 69.   I took some more pics of the lower portion and the inside heater to see if this all goes together (assumptions that it's a cold weather setup).   David  Attachment: Mvc-713x.jpg

Here is a picture of the Hitachi carb and the vacuum control valve. My Chiltons book says it provides advanced timing on deceleration. http://groups.msn.com/NissanPatrolClubA ... otoID=1445 Keith

Keith...You are correct that would be considered early anti-smog and actually that advance the timing trick on deceleration was carried through on quite a number of japanese imports right on up until the later 80's. However in the later years as epa became more stringent this was also accompanied by a vaccum diaphram (similar to the type one would find operating most vac adv. dist.)that was attached to the throttle body shaft to delay the closing of the throttlebutterfly valve. This would prevent the mixture from becoming richer on deceleration alongwith delaying the retardation of the advance curve (i.e. the system you've got) Would enable most of those early imports to pass early calif. EPA. Not only that (and here's the up side!)it also extended your engine life by preventing the piston rings from being washed down by excess unburnt fuel every time you took your foot of the gas.By the way, someone in the discussion, I think it was Grant was asking how or why the fresh to heated air was controlled by vaccum. Here's the answer to that one. First off engine manufactures used manifold vaccum because it has the most consistant source of vaccumwhether the engine is hot or cold or running fast or slow. As opposed to venturi vaccum which varies quite a bit as you step on or of the gas pedal. The vaccum was then controlled by a thermal-sensetive bi-metalic switch(sounds high tech but its really quite a simple device) which would vary the amount of vaccum going to the "trap door" diaphram. This in turn would of course vary the incoming air temp according to the air temp already within theair cleaner itself. Thus preventing the fuel from boiling in the fuel bowl of the carb when the engine got hot and or the outside air temp became to warm for this accessory to be or any use. The reason the" snorkel" tends to face the rear of the engine compartment is probably twofold. Number one being that there may not have been quite enough room for it to face the front(maybe). The other (probably) quite simply. Next time your driving down the road at anything over thirty miles an hour and the temp. is below frezzing. Roll down your window and stick your head out there into the breeze and take a nice deep breath. Feels a whole lot colder than it did when you were just walking through it to go and fire the old girl up, right? O.K. Now imagine just how much colder that fresh air blast is going to be at -20 or -30. Sure would hate to be a carburator at that temp with your mouth facing into it even with an air pre-heating system.Scooter.
