oil pressure.....
Hey everyone- awhile back I asked if anyone had used synthetic oil in their patrol, I assumed that it would be better but after trying it realized that it isnt a good idea, the oil pressure dropped from bad to unacceptable, so bad that i was forced to turn around and cancel my fourwheeling for the day because after a few miles on the highway the oil pressure gauge stopped reading. I drove it home and put in 10/40 and the oil pressure jumped back up to 35 at start up to 12 at idle. By the way, How was the Moab event? I was hoping to find some post or pics....

Intresting Daner.... I was going to reply when you originally posted about synthetics as I put all Amsoil synthetics in my red 66. Yet, it has been parked all winter since and I didn't have much feedback for you. Right after I put the syn in the whole rig I drove it about 40 miles at 55mph and did not notice an oil pressure drop. Oil pressure seemed fine and it drove sweet, much quieter in the diffs and tranny....yet after the drive it seems as though I blew my main tranny seal. So possibly syn is a bad idea in Patrols.... Ian-A large problem with the reason that synthetic didnt work(as explained by a mechanic friend) is that the p40 in the patrols dont have the same tight tolerences that newer motors have, and the particals in synthetic are much smaller. It is possible that on a very tight motor the synthetic would be more feasible....obviously my motor doesnt fall in the "tight" catagory....

that makes sense.... Not sure about my tranny but out of nearly 500 miles I put on my red 66 I blew the tranny seal with only a 50 mile drive so I would not reccomend syn in the tranny either. So now I am curious as I run Amsoil syn in all my rigs...just only got it in one Patrol. Soooo...What is the best for a Patrol???

oil pressure.....
well i run mobil 12-40D this oil is designed for the older detroit diesel engines it is plenty thick so as to keep the valves quiet and it keeps the viscosity up for those not so tight tollerances. the newer engines run 5w-30 because of these tighter tollerances try running 20-50 in a new chevy and the valves will start to clack because it is to thick and will not allow the hyd. valves to pump up correctly. i had this problem at work i am a mechanic and i had a hard time letting go of the 20-50 castrol but as soon as i switched to the recomended 5w-30 the valves quited down especially with the initial startup. goes against everything i thought i knew about oil but maybe those goofy looking engineers do know something.;

ive run synthetic in all my vehicles for a long time now...not 1 problem...ive had synth in my patrol for a year and a half now..no drips or leaks...oil pressure at idle is 45psi ..at higher rpm...almost 90psi......i run mobil1 15/50.....
