G60 Queensland Aust

Post by NewbieResto »

Hi all,

I've had this 1969 G60 for some time and have been slowing restoring as money allows. It has all the original running gear and the motor has never missed a beat, it still kicks over first go everytime. However it is starting to get some worrying rattles and noises indicating that it will need a rebiuld soon. I have been researching for sometime about engine conversions and believe that I will replace the engine with a 250 Crossflow from an XT ford rather than doing an engine rebiuld on the original one. I have found a full conversion kit (plates & mounts) to bolt up to the existing 3 speed box at http://www.rodshop.com.au, which I will be using.

To tell you the truth I love the look of the old G60 and will be using it for a weekend beach basher but would also like to use it as bit of a cruiser. So I will be looking at changing the 3 speed to something a little more highway/fuel friendly (also would mind sincro in first gear ;) ). Seeing as I'm very fresh to 4x4 but do have o.k. machenical skills I look forward to all and any info that will help me improve any aspect of my G60.

Cheers guys

Hey mate, welcome. If you're going to the trouble of an engine swap and you're not a fan of the 3 speed then I'd use a 4 or 5 speed from a MQ or MK patrol and get an adaptor kit to suit that instead. Dellow's sells these conversions to suit

Hi "Miller"

I have had a rethink and done some more research and found what I believe is the correct adapter plates etc from The Castlemaine ROD SHOP http://www.rodshop.com.au/nissan/nissan_patrol.htm ( BH094 MQ PATROL TO FORD XT-XF 6cyl B/HOUSING ) this would allow me to still use the 250 Cross Flow.

My question is - has anyone done this and would I use the whole MQ gear box assembly and will it still match up to my tail shaft. If you look at the link I added you will see that there are 3 sizes available and are all made for the MQ specs which doesn't help me and my G60 tail shaft etc, this would just allow me to match the motor with the gear box I want. If it was all that simple the MQ 5 speed would be the mod that most would make and they would be the perfect donor vehicle (disc brakes, gear box etc). I have no problems making brackets - mounts etc but I would love to be pionted in the right direction rather than fumbling around in the dark or spending $$$$ on things that may not work. So any help would be great and I would ensure that I document the upgrades so that others may use them as a guide (if it hasn't already been done).

After looking at all the Mods that people have been doing here nothings impossible and that gives me some hope and I can't wait to get stuck into mine.

Cheers for any help

I have a g60 ute with a 250 EFI cross flow conversion on an mk patrol 5 speed gearbox, running the original diffs with mq disk brake conversion on the front. Bear with me as ill try to put up some of what i know in some manner that i hope makes sense.
If your intending to swap out the gearbox AND the motor its best to do it all at the same time as this will save down time and costs. You will need custom tail shafts as soon as you move away from the original 3 speed, both because the drive shaft flange bolt paterns are different from the mq/mk pattern, and because the 5 speed box is longer and will require a longer front shaft and a shorter rear. This is a small job compared to what your undertaking with the motor and g box conversion.

For the mk 5 speed box to fit you will have to make custom mounts for it to fit properly, you will need to modify the transmission tunnel, and lastly you will be required to notch out the front g box cross member to give the front drive shaft the required clearance it will need for use under articulation.

the marks adaptors 5 speed gbox that was originaly made to swap in behind the original p motor wont require half as much work, it has essentially the same guts as the mk patrol 5 speed, but with a lower first gear and a higher 5th than either of the gear ratios available in the 5spd mk box.

the mk 5spd box you want is a F5W81A I believe. Which is the 5 speed box found in the later mk model patrol, 1984-1987.
this box was available attached either to the p40 4.0 petrol motor which is a more modernised version of the p motor found in the g60, or behind the sd33t 3.3 turbo diesel from the same year models. These have a longer output shaft and utilise a larger clutch and belhousing than the boxes found on either the 2.8 petrol or naturally aspirated 3.3 diesel.
Some of these 5 speeds were also found behind the naturally aspirated sd33, and the smaller l28 2.8 petrol, these have a smaller bell housing, shorter input shaft, and smaller clutch.
now the 5 speed had 3 different gear ratios available, the difference between the turbo diesel and the 4.0 being just a lower first in the diesel. The 5 speed from the naturally aspirated diesel was the lowest ratio available, and was similar in 1st gear to the highest ratio marks 5 speed available, but had a lower 5th gear.

the marks boxes had 2 ratios available to my knowledge. The higher having a 4.8:1 first, the lower being a 5.14:1. My spare marks box has the 4.8. Which was the better all around range imo. The marks boxes had a higher 5th compared to the mk boxes, again with 2 ratios availble, but both were around 0.78:1 overdrive or so. Im going off whats in my head too btw so forgive me if the exact figures are slightly off from what im posting- im only human.

Now all the bell housings and input shafts in the mq/mk family are interchangeable. I cannot see whats any different in my marks box, but im not pulling it apart just for a side by side comparo, having neither the time nor the inclination. Anyway, the theory is that as long as you have the base 5 speed then you can change over the bell housing and input shaft to whichever one you specifically need- but I can make that easy on you. The 5 speed box off the back of the sd33t mk patrol is the one you want, and its the most common incarnation of the 5 speed anyway. The 5 speed off the 4.0 petrol is whats in my patrol, and its 1st is just a touch too high, imo the sd33t one is spot on with the 250 ford motor.

the clutch for the conversion in mine is a sd33t/p40 one, with the ford flywheel drilled to suit, and I have had no drama with it to date. Its the largest size clutch made for the mk range, but is easy to beef up and the heavy duty gq/gu patrol clutch for the td42t motor has the same input shaft spline size and count, it can be used as a bolt in replacement for the std sd33t clutch, though some fly wheels may need drilling to suit- mine in my sd33t didnt........

um where was I? nup I lost my train of thought, so thats it for now..........

cheers

Oh forgot, the marks 5 speed uses the original transfer case and shouldnt need new tail shaft flanges.

You will need to put some carfull consideration into the exact positioning of the motor and g box too, with the motor being the more critical of the 2, it has a spot thats just right and allows good clearance for all necessaries, esp the engine mounted fan which is utterly critial to proper cooling performance. You will NOT get the thing to run at any stable running temp with thermo fans, I know, I tried.

the original radiator is also better off left with the original motor wherever it ends up, and whilst the 250 motors rad is a tight fit, its does fit and is about 20 percent better in cooling efficiency than the g60 rad.
You will need to shroud the fan in to correct the draw through the rad, and I had to use some rubber to block the air gaps around the sides of the rad. Its important that the air coming into the engine bay ALL comes through the rad, not around it.
Thermo fans can be used as aditional cooling, particularly if set up to thermostatically come on around 92deg, this means really it only kicks in and out when mooching about town at low speeds when the motor has "issues"

I have not measured up the mk patrol radiator to see if its a viable option, but from memory it was wider than the falcon rad which was a tightish fit anyway.

Really a thermo fan is just another thing to go wrong and more wiring adding clutter, if the original multi blade viscous fan is retained the thermo fan is very rarely if ever needed. I retained mine as a fail safe only, and then discovered that if it really is needed then its likely that engine damage is already done.

bonnet vents at the rear of the bonnet help get rid of the mass of trapped hot air in the engine bay. Mine dropped my running temps by a solid 10 deg.

The original log exhaust manifold is another huge heat trap, easily fixed too with the adition of extractors.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Limtied Slip

This info is a massive help and really points me in the right direction, I'm definately changing out 3 speed and motor (sorry for not staying true original  ) to get the best out of my G60.

TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH - I believe I have found a needle in a hay stack and I'm just waiting on confirmation. It MAY have a 308 Holden V8 and it MAY have a MARKS 5 speed (nor sure on ratio) and a lot of added MODS/Upgrades. I will know in a few days this means I will be making a SUPER G60 :music-rockout: :text-woo: out of the two that I MAY have ;) ;) ;)

I will keep the site posted on the outcome and you never know my next posted MIGHT be on the PROJECTS list.
