backfiring in carb

hey everyone. it's been awhile since i've been on. i have a question about my patrol. everytime i try to give it gas the carb backfires. i've tried to adjust the mixture but it just won't make a difference. i'm getting good spark. i think i might need to jet it down a bit but i'm not sure. any help would be great.R.J.

hell-o RJ....   It can only be 2 things. carb is to lean and or ingintion is out of adjustment. If adjusting the mixture doesn't do anything then the carb is likely shot. I have had to rebuild the Rochester 2-3 times before it would even run right. It is a cheap low quality carb that has lot's of problems in my opinion. If your timing is set right and the distro is working right it is all in the carb. usually when timing is out it will backfire out the exhaust not the carb. To lean and it fires up in the carb. Super lean and it will produce flames! Check ignition and set timing. If it still does it tear the crab off, get a rebuild kit and rebuild it. Rochester kits run $25 at Napa...   Before tearing the carb off you could check to see if it has leaks. Spary it with carb cleaner all over. It will bog down if a leak is there as the cleaner will get sucked into the carb. i think starting fluid works too but that stuff is plain dangerous in my opinion! Also check all vac lines to make sure there is no vac leak.  You could adjust your valves but they won't have anything to do with this problem.   In general if it fires out the exhaust it is a manifold or exhaust leak. Timing way out can make it do this too. To rich and it won't backfire but will blow smoke and foul plugs. If it fires up in carb it is to lean and or timing is out. That is pretty much all there is to back firing.   Good luck! Ian
