It mentions that the pinion has 9 teeth, so it will work.

From one of the images posted, it looks exactly as the spare starter that I keep from my defunct 1974. Totally interchangeable with the earlier one.

The part number cross referenced in this page is Nissan 23300-C0600. This corresponds to the newer style starter motor from 1974 and up for the P engine. The price also is very tempting at $135.

I am vaguely remembering an incompatibility amongst the starters, but I don't recall the details. Something about the later starter not fitting on the earlier Patrols. Or was it that the starter for the P40 didn't fit on the P engine? Esteban?

You're correct, Leslie.There was a discussion some years ago regarding this issue. Somebody mentioned that for the P40 engine there was one starter with a 9 teeth pinion gear, and another with a 13 teeth- pinion gear???. I personally don't have that info. It's probably that there's a problem with reach, since looking at pictures, both look the same.

We need Swerve now! He's one of the few that actually has dealt with the two engines and at one time mentioned he had the 2 starters.

What I can be sure is that the 74-80 P engine starter, fits without any problems on the previous generation issued Hitachi starter. I've interchanged in mine these two.

Up to 1974 Starter is 1kW
From 1974 and up is 1.2kW

We really need the final answer on this, and then create a stickie post with that info.

I put it in red because this is a de ja vu about to happen again. Do not buy this starter from Helmar, it is for a P40!!! The problem is the nose does not get in far enough for the 9 teeth to mesh with the fly wheel. The teeth on the flywheel are 1 1/4"-1 3/4" inside the mounting face.....the teeth on this P40 starter only stick out 3/4" extended (when actuated by the magnetic switch and shaft lever) and we dont get contact unless it reaches in 1 1/2" or so. I looked at grinding and modding this and that but just dont fit......shit. I had tried these before and did not remember the details but here are shots to piss you off how close it is. Oddly the mounting holes are 1/8" off.....the new/small one is wider. I tried to see if the solenoid would transfer but the housing/mounting is different. There could be some part swapping to rebuild an original but I dont think I have the time.

I just had my starter rebuilt locally. $200 , but it does work now.

I had done the old big one too and it works great. I have the shorter starter in my 65 and think it alright but not positive. I will get that one rebuilt if not but seriously folks......don't loose steam on this. If someone is in the market take a small chance and buy this one in Estebans post. Just remember to return it in time http://store.alternatorparts.com/partno ... 18110.aspx I really think it may work and if you can get the seller to pull that pinion forward and measure the "throw" from the mounting face we are in there with new starters.

Agree totally.

Since I have the starter from my 1974 at hand, I will take some measurements. Maybe somebody could use those when talking to the store in the "good" link.
