Brake Wheel Cylinders

I'm getting ready to order a full set of these front and rears and i was wondering if anyone on here had any problems with getting them in? Are the brake line threads the same? I see in an earlier post that the studs are the same.

I think I recall that they installed without any issues.

There is a mod that might be necessary if the rear shoes have a lot of lining left on them. I created a sticky post for that mod here:

The brake line threads fit just fine too and they all installed fine for me, except my one rear where the lining was too thick so I had to do a mod. I didn't know about the approved mod that River posted when I was doing it, so I did it differently. I ground off the ends of the brake shoes instead of grinding the cylinders. This may come back to bite me later doing it this way, but it's too late now. I'm still not completely finished with the whole replacement job, I have some adjusting to do, but so far they have all fit fine. Hopefully I'll have time this weekend to finish the job and I can let you know more next week.

Sounds good, i'm getting ready to go through it too. I have done plenty of brakes in my time and i hope this one goes just as smooth. I went through the front and had them all apart. They are pretty easy as far as drums go. Let me know how yours comes out.

I finished the latest adjustments and I can report the brakes work great now, those new cylinders made the job simple! The whole job went pretty smooth for me with a just 3 minor glitches. Having to do the mod for the the brake lining being too thick on one wheel, and my breaking a brake line removing one of them, so I had to bend another line, and then not adjusting the brake cams properly the first time, so my pedal was too loose. But having those brand new parts made the rest of the job go quite smoothly. I only put about 5 miles on it testing this weekend, but from what I see, now that they are properly bled and adjusted they work great! Good luck with your project, since you've done brakes before I bet it'll go quite smoothly for you!

I just bought and had them installed. The rear of the cylinders are different( the slit is shallow and not open from one end to the other) than the originals for a 1969. the shoe that sits on that patricular end has to be modified and grinder down. No clip to hold down the rubber dust cover so use your old ones. I will take the original ones nd have them rebuilt by a reputable Co. In Va. ( White Post Restorations) for about 80 USD each. They will bore it out and put in a brass sleeve. Life time gaurantee. if they ever leak, simply send it back and they will fix it for free. Try to send it with snail mail. It will save you a ton of green backs, or whatever color your dinero is. Hope this help

Thanks for sharing your experience with these wheel cylinders, and the lead to White Post Restorations. I've heard of them before, and the sleeving method of rebuilding the cylinders. That's great to know they carry a lifetime guarantee. There is a mod to accommodate for the difference in the slot where the end of the shoe fits, without having to grind down the shoe. It's a few posts above this one.

So, now you need to introduce yourself and put up some pics of your Patrol!

I thought about this step, butI wasn't sure the damage to do this on the rear cylinders. I wish I would have paid attention to this and I probably would have done it this way. Oh we'll! Thanks again. I may send the rear cylinder to get redone at White Post. Question: I noticed that the originals have a retention clip for the robber cup. The new ones lack this. Does it need it or are they fine without it?
