Re: Large (Aussie) Size axle Nut
I measured the shaft and nut this morning.
The thread size is 1.563 X 18. This is a readily available standard Bearing Locknut Shaft Collar size.
An older McMaster Carr catalog sells it for less than $8.
Theirs is 1/16” thicker than Nissan’s, and only has one notch for locking.
A local bearing supply company will probably stock this nut and the lock-tab washer.
Or, Google “1.563x18 locknut”. Lots of sources will show up.

Re: Large (Aussie) Size axle Nut
Mild Bill,
Please don't tell my kids. I was sure that $100 nut I bought from down under was going to be scheduled as major inheritance item.
Oh well, better to know I have fools gold in the vault now rather than later.
I will order a couple of those nuts.

I think we all have a few of those “seemed like a good deal at the time” purchases hidden away somewhere.

Very interesting description:rdarnell wrote:looks pretty close to me! https://www.mcmaster.com/#6343k21/=1bxrnyj
In addition to fine threads, which provide close engagement on your shaft, these locknuts have a flexible lining that hugs the shaft to lock your bearing in place. They help eliminate the looseness commonly associated with locknuts that use keyways and lock washers, which are not required with these collars. They also allow precision positioning and better squareness of the retaining ring to the bearing face to hold bearings in place. All locknuts work with SAE, ABEC, and ANSI/ABMA standard products. Adjust with a spanner wrench.
So basically the lock-washer can be eliminated?
Please note also that Nissan changed the thread on the left axle to a LH in Sep-67. So the above nut will only work on the right axle for 67 and up models. Previous models have the same nut for both axles.

Re: Large (Aussie) Size axle Nut
I think I would still want to run a locking washer on it... just in case!
