Fuel pump leak

Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

Fuel pump leak

Post by Wylder1324 »

What's the common course of action here ? Looks like I've got a pretty good leak on the bottom side. I haven't gotten it off yet to see where it's coming from. Just curious what everyone is doing when theirs fails.

The rebuild kits for these mechanical fuel pumps are almost unattainable and depending on where you find them they are really pricey. Cant remember is the bottom is just a seal or if it is part of the pumps function, but if it is just a seal I would suggest that you just get some good gasket material and make a new one.

I saw where someone posted a part number and website for a datsun/nissan forklift pump that is supposed to work. Can anyone confirm this ?

Pretty sure the diaphragm is leaking. There are "weep holes" in the lower case to let fuel escape externally when this happens so the gas doesn't enter the crankcase.
The diaphragm seems to be the hard part to obtain.
I had a couple of old pumps (one with hand primer) and wanted the original look, so using fuel proof neoprene, I blocked-off everything (including the actuating lever hole to the engine)and removed all unnecessary guts. I then mounted an electric pump just fwd of the fuel tank.
I see you have an L320 also. I've been driving mine regularly since 1972. It's a '64 model. I put an electric pump on it probably 35 yrs ago. Still running good.
If anybody is interested, a local friend has a '65 partly restored L320 that he'd like to sell.
I can provide info about it.

Hmmm interesting concept. So you just bypassed the old fuel pump altogether with the electric and left it bolted on to the case for aesthetics ? What type of electronic pump did you go with ?

I saved this info some time ago. This is probably the fuel pump for the P40 engine, which is the same as the one on the P engine.

Awesome info Esteban!!! That's about how much a rebuild kit costs,,,if you can find one!!!! Wonder if they make a rebuild kit for these and if it would work on the stock P pumps

Can't really remember what electric pump I put on the patrol. ($3 garage-sale-nearly-new type)
I can crawl under and look later. It is a centrifugal pump with an impeller, whereas the one on my L320 is a pulsing magnetic type to which I added an inline Purolator brand regulator to reduce to about 3psi. I think the Patrol is supposed to receive about 7-9 psi? I can't remember a lot, it seems :)
When I modified the Patrol engine-driven pump, I didn't move the fuel lines. The gas still passes through the pump as before, but there is now no lever-arm, diaphragm, or spring inside.
McMaster Carr sells the fuel proof sheet rubber that I used to block off the various areas of the pump. I used 2mm, Buna N, 60 shore hardness.
Just crawled under ...it's a Mr Gasket micro electric universal 12s . It has 5/16 fittings which match the Patrol size.

So I got my fuel pump in from the forklift service site and it's PERFECTO. Looks exactly like original and works flawlessly.
