Ignition Coil

Original and compatible parts

Postby L60Boerne » Sat Sep 16, 2023 8:59 am

Last weekend on the 06 Ranch I finally had an ignition coil failure. It was a two year old coil and it failed while running. Most people carry a Swiss Army knife, I carry an Eddie the Eagle.

First, I thought it was a vapor lock but Eddie quickly tested sparks to narrow it down to the coil.

We were able to run into town just before 9 PM and get another couple of coils. But Eddie made the following corrections.

First, the upgraded (high output) coils are too powerful for the Patrols. The normal lower voltage coils will not heat up so much and we are switching all Patrols back to those.

Second, if you have a 65 or older with push button starts…..don’t leave the key on! It quickly cooks the coil.

Lastly, Eddie is putting a capacitor inline so as to help prevent coil failures. See the attached.

Though it is impossible to film the trails we take fully loaded, (over loaded), Patrols on you can imagine a coil failure at the wrong time with poor brakes and no E brake might be fatal.

Here we are returning to the hunt all happy the next day.

Rolling and Patrolling,

Eddie all smiles in his sombrero which is 100% necessary in the high scorching desert driving sun up to past dark.

Leaving the key on will also burn up your Pertronix ignition.

Pertronix actually recommends using a low voltage coil with the electronic ignition kit. It also recommends to remove any external resistors. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/pnx-40011

It is so great to see you out using and enjoying your Patrols! :D
