SWERVE - 1978 Ute (HellPatrol)

Post by Swerve »

Mon Nov 10, 2008 9:15 pm

Well after months of planning the weekend was here for a 3000km road trip to collect HellPatrol.

For those who don't know HellPatrol lived in Adelaide and I'm in Sydney, that 1400km across almost half of Australia. I know I'm weird, but the chance to buy HP from another forum member with an element of trust, was priceless. When I had bought the other 1978 Ute (bright Orange called OJ) I contacted Nathan and chatted about the future of HP as I had a ute tub, but no ute, OJ was rusted out badly.

Anyhow he had changed his mind at the time, but promised to call me should plans change, well about 6 months later (ring ring) actually was a email or PM. Anyhow I said YES without the approval from the wife, sorted that one out with a shopping budget and now had to plan how to get this ute back to Sydney.

After getting a pile of car shipping quotes, best price door to door was around $900, fuel and a trailer would cost about the same. Difference was the shipping mobs wouldn’t allow any spares or anything inside the car. Simple this option was out :(

I then had a mate with a lease vehicle; in Oz you need to get a certain amount of Km's each year to meet taxation purposes (FBT). So I struck a deal to take his ute while he was overseas (yeah free fuel). Also worked out to sell a few bits along the way (Eddy, you owe me cash 8)

So the day came and we departed 3:30pm Friday 7th November, half way there we hit heavy rain which gave my fearless co-driver "Ferdy" a hellish drive as the car with trailer was swaying and going all over place when hitting BIG puddles at 100km/hr. Ferdy was also struggling with a shoulder injury so it was double painfully !! Thanks ferdy, without your help I wouldn't have been able to do this weekend.

Anyhow kept on driving to the outskirts of Waikerie (Eddy's town) and had a quick sleep on the side of the road (hour or 2) and then rocked into Eddies at 7:30am or so. Did our business deal and Eddie had to go with family duties so said our goodbyes and were off.

Then a quick 2 hour drive or so into Adelaide, met another bloke to collect some wheels and then south to HellPatrols place, I managed to get myself lost and had a quick tour of Port Adelaide, very nice !!! Anyhow after a few calls to HP we got back on the right track. After some more chatting, the freeway I was planning on taking was closed. Would you believe they have a one way freeway   I was going the wrong way for that time of day :( as they change it to meet the traffic flow ?

Anyhow HP saved the day and was already making his way into town to find me and take me home. Got to HP's house and started drooling over my new purchase, in short I am very pleased and she has a few pieces on a G60 I had never seen before, will write more later on this !!!

Did our $$$$$ deal and started loading her up

Best part of that exercise was the beer afterwards!! :D hmmm beer. After much deliberating Mr's HP gave me a street directory and off we went, to my surprise I had HP following me halfway out of town taking photos and video. Just when I thought I was free, this evil  black jeep was there

No we were on out way home and heading out of Adelaide to Murray Bridge, here we have a big hill and the Rodeo was struggling all the way up, poor beast. Once over the hills we were all good.

Had a late lunch at Murray Bridge and took a few quick snaps

Pretty straight forward drive from here until midnight, when we got to Balranald, had dinner at a truck stop and off again, we then had heaps of kangaroos on the side of the road, in groups of 30. I was painfully paranoid and stayed on 60km/hr until a truck caught me (had to wait a hour and covered only 60km  ) Once on a trucks tail I sat back on 100km with some safety of the trucks bull bar.

More driving straight through the night until we hit Wagga at sunrise, then home stretch 450km home, At Joigong we stopped at a rest stop and then from nowhere this little terrier came up to me, we were in a rural location we no houses or anyone nearby, after much deliberating we chucked him in the car

Image

Were we found him
Image
Image

As he was on the HWY with cars zooming past at 110km we went up a local dirt road hoping he had come from a nearby homestead, bloody hard with a 2.4 tonne trailer behind you. We gave up and headed home.

We got to Goulburn and had to change a trailer tyre as 30km outside town we could feel a problem, the rear right had a slow puncture, this meant the front right was taking allot more load, I felt the trailer was a bit more unstable, makes sense when I now know the pivot point had moved forward, with more weight up rear of the trailer. The front right tyre was now overloaded and starting to separate. Put the spare on and got home.

After a great breakfast from the wife for Ferdy and me, I did some unloading, chores and down to the pound wit the dog. Luckily he was microchipped and he lived in Canberra, he had been dropped at a friends place where he had escaped !! lucky i picked him up. Better still the owners were in Sydney and picked him up today !! All good as I’m a big dog lover !

Started polishing her this afternoon and that right hand side is now shiny as !!!!! almost as good as the For Sale photos !!!!

Ok started to try and get this beast running !!!

Lucky for me NOT the PO removed half the bits and peices to make my life hard (No hard feelings HP )

HP had advised he had pulled bits out to go on his HX and the UTE was at one stage being wrecked so I'm lucky to have it, in the one peice that i have.

After researching LPG systems last night and taking my backyard mechanic course 101 in fitting and fault finding LPG systems I had a great idea !! Lets try petrol !!!

Remember with LPG you have a setup similiar to this
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m237 ... Wiring.jpg

Many thanks to OL for lifting this picture. This was most helpfull !!

Inshort HP had all the electronic bits removed and I had to jigsaw it back togethor, along with all the wiring in the engine bay disconnected (some cut) and the coil removed.

So after refitting a stock coil from OJ with the correct terminals I cranked her over ! Hmmmm, nothing, I had placed fuel in the tank etc, As the LPG has a petrol solenoid to stop petrol enetring the carbie when the gas is running, I was confused, wasnt sure if 12v to meant it was open or closed.

So pulled the petrol ines and cranked, sure enough we have petrol, did the same with the line connected , and output from the solenoid open, nothing, in short you need 12v to the petrol solenoid to work. Have all that sorted !!

Still coudnt get the beast to start so a little fuel down the carbie and she was spluttering away. Still I either have a blocked line from the petrol solenoid output into the carbie, it is possible as petrol wasnt used by HP, will need to blast the carbie laster with compressed air and see how we go, as I cant smell it flooding when I crank it over. still I think it has more to do with the gas tuning as the gas entered above the need in the air intake.

So back to the LPG, traced all wires and found both LPG solenoids at the tank and engine bay, 12v to these confirm they work and GAS should flow, NOTHING, check LPG tank and bugger shes empty !!!

So how can I get the LPG topped up without

a- towing her down there
b- pull it out and take it down there
c- Jerry of some description ?

Also the wiring to the starter was loose and shorting the solenoid causing her to start cranking by herself. That is also all sorted.

I'm currently think of taking of the LPG carbie and putting my goo dcarbie from OJ, this should enable me to get her running on Petrol with only timing being th issue !

This is the best way now I think about it as I need to get her registered on Petrol and then install my LPG and get my $2000 goverment grant !!! might spend $1000 getting the tank re-certified and LPG signed off.

Thats all right now !!

See ya

She has a 5 speed already that needs rebuilding.

Plans are

1- Re-install 3 speed and original tailshafts
2- Reinstall OJ carbie and remove LPG system for tanl inspection
3- Get registered, which means fixinf lots of small things, lights, tyres etc.
4- Once registered re-installed LPG system, get certifed and clain $2000 goverment rebate
5- Continue cleaning her up as she has a few rust spots but nothing serious
6- Rebuild Marks 5 speed myself and install
7- Use as tow vehicle for the boat and as general hack as buying good new car for Maz, and will probaly sell the the GU Patrol
NOTE - we only use one car as it is so the GU is now only a weekend driver or tow vehicle, wasting away

8- Get the original ute tub shippe dodwn south to mates dad's place and get all rust fixed, new floor put in etc, will not be the prettist, but rust free and useable. then re-install.

9- Also going to use the original wheels from OJ.

The carby float jet could be blocked.

Had the same when I first got the 61. Just gave it a quick puff of compressed air into the fuel line and all was good.

If it's been running on gas, and still had the float bowl full of fuel, the float will act like a hammer and drive the needle into the seat, and it'd get wedged in there.

Well installed a front driveshaft in HP and drove her in FWD.

At least now she is mobile and I don't need to leave her on the street !!! Now parked safely in the driveway

Well my theory was wrong about being able to use a MWB rear shaft on a LWB (rear) with a Marks 5 speed. Still i will need to measure all my driveshafts and work out what will fit. I'm lucky I have a selection of MWB (F&R)and LWB (F&R) shafts as spare !!!

Hopefully on the weekend I'll do a quick illegal run down to the servo for some LPG !!! yeahhhhhhh.

Yeah I got a 2nd Marks now. One from before in teh 72 now, and a shagged one with the 78 Ute "HellPatrol" It needs a rebuild and only works in two gears right now. Plan tomorrow (Sunday) is to drop the 5 speed and drop in a 3 speed (have 3 laying on the garage floor :) )

The 2nd 78 UTE (OJ) yes it's bright orange was bought for the tub but it heavily rusted. Nothing compared to USA standards, but bad for a Aussie. Engine was sold to Eddy for the G61. UTE Tray will go on Hellpatrol, and cab for spares etc. Rocket was bought for the PTO winch and I didnt feel like scraping anoth car back then. How you forget !!! The 72 is still being restored for heavy offraod and now has MQ diffs with lockers. It already has a 5 speed which is installed and wiring alomost finished. Up to panel work !!! :(

GEARBOX bring it on

Well now is 8:53am Sunday and the gearbox is out ! Plus I'm cleaned and showered as i need a break from being up so early. I didnt plan to start at 7am but well I did.

I think I'll do this in stages so will clock off now for removal

Gearbox Removal start - 7:04am
Gearbox Removal fininsh - 8:41am
Total Time - 1 hour 37 min

Note - Times confirmed by camera !! Also took quite a few shots which will be helpful for Red dog when he installed his Marks
Mats removed and starting on the floor covers

I guess I should undo the linkages

Sliding a box on wood is easier then concrete, and doesn’t damage your box

The replacement, just need to swap over the PTO covers.

Well got the bloody clutch out :D

My technique was !!

1- Undid the rearbox mounts (top ones),
2- took out the bar which supports the handbrake
3- Took throw out bearing out through top
4- Clutch would still not fit through bottom, so jack engine rear up about 1.5" (undid mounts)
5- Clutch out !!!

Note - still cant get the spiggot out, will be talking to my local mechanic to borrow some tools !

Note 2 - Tried for around an hour toget the spiggoy out but she is in there really good ?

Kackup up the engine

That bloody spiggot

The aftermath
Image

Well got home from work late and my spiggot removal tool was there !! Of course was itching to try it and after dinner, out to the driveway to try it.

Well what fun did I have !!!

After modifying the tool to make it fit inside the bellhousing the claws were not long enough to get behind the smalled bush(which is sleeved inside the original bush) The smaller bush is about 1" in from the front of the larger bush. Hence I need claws about 1.5" long.

Bugger, bugger, bugger

Tried to find a socket for the grease trick but again I need about a 10mm socket 1.5" long, But between my two 1/2" and 1/" drives the heads are to big to get any depth.

Just realises I have the Cabstar input shaft which should have the correct size end. thats another night to see if it woill be long enough and try John grease press.

Also after a quick measurement the Marks 5 speed flogged it;s input shaft as it wasnt supported by the spiggot. After measuring the input shaft stopped just before the smaller bush, This explains why the input shaft flogged itself out and then taking gears with it.

For those installing a 5 speed make sure the spiggot is flush with the flywheel and is tigh enough not to push forward when installing or drive the box.

On my 72 I had one made up with was 1" long so I'm sure it;s all ok, but then I'm not about to pull it apart to find out.

The bloody little metal bastard, peice of cr&p, little sucker and every name under the sun, moon, panents, you name it.

IT'S OUT

Well tried for about 2 hours this morning and even visted my local mechanic who had suggested the same stuff I had been doing. After much f'ing around I gave up.

Had a sleep as we had a hot one, plus the hangover from last nights Christmas party did'nt help

Went back out and started hacksawing with a blade taped to 10mm rodd. Only had about 1" of a stroke, plus the most uncomftable position. Then started also chipping of the front lip with a small screwdriver and got half (the front skinny part) chipped out.

Back to the hacksaw, well I though I might be there, but you can't really see inside to tell. Got my home made removal tool
Image
Image

Well sure enough I felt it move, at first i wasnt sure if it was he bolt sliding out of the bush? Well looked back inside and

Image

PROGRESS !!!!!!!!!!1 This so made my day as my chat with my local mechanic was negative. He also felt my fustration as his removal tool like mine wasnt deep enough and he has been through many other various methods.

I figured i would bash my spare opriginal bush back in. In my stupidness I thought I would use a socket to keep it square, However it wedged inside and cracked/ destroyed my bush.

Well time to shop for a new original bush ! or get one machined up ! Bugger, bugger, ges i can be stupid sometimes. Ah well it;s done.

My modified bolt

Nathan I dont like that name Hellpatrol as it is giving me hell. Feel like naming it angel in the hope everything becomes easy.

OK, this morning I out the clutch in and was looking good to having the box installed.

Got the box very well lined up about 1.5" from being all teh way in but couldn't get the input shaft to slot into pivott bush and the spline to mesh with the clutch.

What made it worse was my trolley jack was loned out and I needed it to raise the rear of thebox, the standard GU jack in a pain and has no wheels.

New rule being made in my house. NO ONE EVER IS ALLOWED TO BORROW TOOLS AWAY FROM MY HOUSE. For you who don't know all my mates family etc borrow my crap, some gets lost or I forget or other stuff is away when I need it like today.

I spent 6 hours in the drive in 35 degree heat and am just over it. Car is left with a hoist through teh door and box hanging. I will need to recover my tools, and may have to call a favour in from Ferdy and it is also a bitch by yourself to position and try and get that box in.

Interesting day as I was on the phone talking with RP and then my help (Ferdy) turned up. We all had a good discussion about RP’s new ute and some special features I’ll let RP share. I have also spoken with the seller and RP should be good to get that ute.

Anyhow out to the garage and started lining up the gearbox. Again we got her to about 1.5” from being all the way in but no luck. After discussing various option I separated the Marks 5 speed from the transfer to see how hard it was to do, and to make sure I had no surprises while doing it on HP.

Pulling apart the Marks makes me think Nathan had already had this box out and he chucked it back in for sale. I don’t care Nathan so don’t worry. The nut hold the transfer on was loose, with the lock washer not locked ? anyhow that is all separated so easier to move around the garage and when the time comes can start the rebuild.

While I was doing this Ferdy was tinkering on HP. Really worries me as he is like a child and plays, moves, tinkers etc (wink) Anyhow after doing the Marks we try again using leavers etc to push this box in as the suspision was the Spiggot (Pivot) bush was slightly bent from hammering in. So Ferdy suggested we jack the gearbox in. Placing the Original Nissan GU jack (screw type) at the rear transfer round thngo and onto the crossmember we started, sure enough she started going in YEAH

YEAH

YEAH

Anyhow we bolt her in, do up the bolts nas then realize the bottom left nut has to go on when the box is ½” off. Undo bolts and back on. Bolt back up an dthen realize again the clutch bracket needs to go on, unbolt, bolt again, FUN HEY.

All back on and then start playing with the clutch, then realize the clutch fingers are a good ½” out of alignment. Looking it is very tight and hard to adjust the fingers with the clutch inplace. I’d say not impossible, but a royal pain in the ar$e.

I then worked out I could flip the little lever at the end of the yoke (which connect to the slave cyl rod) we do this and can still get enough movement to engage/ disengage the clutch.

So we then start her up and start to use the box, in 1st gear I couldn’t get the gearbox to turn as it would stall the engine. This box is the green box and hasn’t been used for, say 2 years. Anyhow tried again and she popped back into operation. I checked the oil before installing and all was good, if she dies I don’t care as I have boxes coming out of my backside.

On a side note I purchased another engine/ box/ transfer on ebay today, right price couldn’t say no, So again have another one

Well was now 3pm or so and kicked Ferdy out, got cleaned up and went out for lunch with the Mrs. Back home and slept, as was now sore and was over G60’s. Walking up about 6pm back out and unbolted the rear tailshaft from OJ and installed in HP. The clutch master is also leaking badly now so unbolted the spare from the green firewall, will install later and only topped up the clutch fluid. Cleaned up tools, moved the boat and went for a drive down the street. Need to fix the timing and possibly a tune, as she only runs on petrol with the choke out, hard as you can’t accelerate, etc.

So next I will change the clutch master and tune her up. Also need to change the brake master as it is shot but not so bad.

Well that was my G60 day. Just glad it’s all over. Not happy with the clutch, but is I need to change it again, the whole engine/ box will come out. Not doing this method again (hoist through floor), I don’t care what anyone says. Never again !!! Except, I need to help Ferdy put his back in using the same method. Grumble, but that’s how it works.

OK, Little progress today as we have had temps this week over 105 degrees Faranheit (spelling).

This afternoon after help my mate Charle's buy another GQ Patrol (Another story) I swapped out the Hellpatrol Carbie for the Carbie from OJ which I know was tuned nicely. Remember I can't tune a carbie for crap and did try the other day but gave up. Well after swapping a few linkages and mounts from old to new carbie HP will now actually idle and run like a normal Patrol. Before she would only run on the choke. As I don't need the OJ carbie anymore for the 72 as the 2 barrel adapter plate arrived I'm sweet.

So next was to look at the clutch master cylinder as this was leaking on you feet (serious). I had pulled the spare form the green firewall and just had to install it. As it be the clutch line will not seperate from the master cyl. After much cursing and fart ar$ing around I had to just cut it off. Will need to buy a new thingo (you know hollow screw with thingo?) and then reflange the line.

Well new master cyl is in along with fixing up the 4wd linkages while I was there ! So no chance of getting that stuff untill business hours on Tuesday for me so hopefully on to the brakes. They need a good 2 or 3 pumps. Will do a quick bleed of the brakes tomorrow if I can buy some brake fluid and that will hopefully fix it.

Then fix a few electric's, do some temp rust repairs and hide some rust holes and get rego, (might need to borrow some wheels for rego, tread )
