Backup Light Switch

Since a backup light was optional, I'm assuming the hole in the tranny is filled by a plug. But looking through the parts manual doesn't show where it is installed. Does anyone know where the switch goes and maybe a NAPA or other part number for one that will work. I'm hoping that a generic switch is all I'll need. Wouldn't that be nice?

I did find a backup light switch that I think is going to work. There is a lot more thread than is needed, but I figure it only needs to be screwed down until the button is actuated by the reverse shaft. I had it working for a few cycles but then it seems to have frozen in the "on" position. I don't know if it is just a defective switch or I cranked too hard on the nut (it got really tight the further down I screwed it) and tweaked something inside - that would surprise me. Am going to play around with it some more and probably get another one. For now I have a toggle switch on the dash - I just have to remember to turn it off.

Its a GM part and the part number is 14069600. Threads are 16m x 1.5 as required. Seems readily available, at least from NAPA and O'reilly's. They run about $17 - $25 depending on where you get it.

To bring everyone up to date, the #14069600, although not a direct replacement, will work. However I think the first one I got was defective because as I mentioned in my last post not only were the threads very tight, after a few cycles it locked in the "on" position.
I went to my local auto parts store and the replacement they gave me was #89006, SKU 41266 00251, and made in the USA. The threads on this one are perfect, but too long so an 8mm spacer is needed between the bottom of the nut and the tranny shifter housing. And it was only about $6.
Since I was playing with a spare housing on my workbench, I was able to get a few good snapshots of the installation which I'll upload to the gallery (They're in my Album because I haven't figured out hot to attach them directly to this post, if it's even possible). I used washers for my spacer, but am going to cut down an old kingpin bushing that I had in my junk box. The ID of the spacer wants to be 12-13mm to keep it from being too sloppy over the threads, not that it really matters once the switch is tightened down - it just looks a bit better. I’m going to install it on my rig today.
When installing it, I put the shift lever in the reverse position and my continuity tester on the pins. Then just turned it in until the tester buzzed. I don't know if the 8mm is going to be correct for all units, but that's what mine was.

You can easily display pictures that are in your album in a post. When you are composing the new post, select the button just above the post text window that says 'Gallery'. This will give you a window showing the most recent pictures you have uploaded to your album. Just select the 'Insert Image into Post' button and it's there. For better view ability, put each picture on a separate line.

For some reason I'm not able to upload any more photos (just the 6 from my introduction way back when). The end result after the process is a blank screen. Don't know what the problem is. Maybe something to do with FireFox.

The pictures that you upload to an album must be smaller than 1280 x 1020 pixels, and less than 2 mb. Check your files, maybe that's the problem. Also, only upload maybe 10 at a time. I have noticed that Gallery is not cooperating with more than 10 or so pictures being uploaded.

Now that I've been educated on how to include a pic in a post, I'll try again (sometimes it's surprising that I can successfully walk through a door )

The two shots showing the interior action are just for the tech minded folks - this obviously can't bee seen without taking the shift lever housing off.

I think the important part is that once the switch is screwed partially in, a meter or some other type of indicator should be attached and then with the tranny in reverse, turn it in only a quarter of a turn or so at a time until the button is activated. If it is too tight, it will at best bind up and worst case, ruin the switch.
