This week, finished dismantling my '77 donor car. Completely

Have to make room in the shed for a motor rebuild ( for a Toyota, but let's not go there ;) ).

Some thoughts after my first complete Patrol disassembly...

1) previous owners should be drawn and quartered for some of the mods they do...I mean seriously, just use good fasteners of the same thread...mixing metric and imperial on the same bolt-on accessory is just plain not cool !
2) rusted bolts suck. Angle grinders are very useful
3) that bell-housing arrangement...WHAT THE ??? I have to remove the clutch and flywheel first ??? ...must have been approaching a deadline when someone signed off on that, seriously
4) heavy...sooooooo heavy...everything is massive ! Except for the chassis, which I was surprised to be able to maneuver by myself...
5) can't wait to get busy building the G61 ute project now...I'm inspired !

It's had a full life and explored much of Australia judging by the stickers and the variety of dirt inside the chassis...and now it has come to an end :violin:

Finally did a bit of 4WDing in the forest trails. A little more muddy that we expected. My mate came down the hill on the right and slid off the track into a ditch. I got stuck trying to get past to give a hand.

However a group of friendly 4WDrivers (in the background) pulled over to give us a hand - the only guys we saw all day. Using 3 4WDs we retrieved the LandRover.

Overall a good day.

Mud is fun to play in, but I H8 cleaning it up afterward!
Even though you both got stuck, this is an excellent example of not going out alone. Glad somebody else came along to help.

Ah, a G60 in its natural habitat - thanks so much for the pic, keeps me ( and probably others ) focused on the goal rather than the frustrations and barked knuckles during the build

Cheers,
D

PS - well done on retrieving the Landy, don't litter Australia !

Finished dismantling my '75 - except for the fixed pins in the rear springs ( they're rusted into the crush tubes and have a date with the angle grinder tonight ! ).

Saved...
A pair of '60s outer fenders in reasonable condition - perfect when upgrading the headlights to LED versions with integral parking lights,
Drivetrain - all good except that when I popped the drain plug out of the Marks 5spd the first litre to drain out was water ! :o
4-post bull bar ( more like a rhinoceros bar ) - the plan is to cut this down to make a lighter, more svelte version with a winch mount,
A near perfect steering wheel,
A pair of AVM freewheeling hubs,
A set of 5 near new Sunraysia-style steel wheels and 31" tires,
A pair of '60s windscreen wiper motors - I'm so tempted to use these just so I have wipers that aren't synchronised - pure gold !
All the other "unobtanium" small parts ( engine mounts, shift knobs, dash controls, etc. ).

From what I can tell it was a well used Patrol, and had an old-school ARB exoskeleton roll-cage at some point...before it got rolled and had many of the body panels replaced with '60s parts.

R.I.P. Lawn Patrol :violin:

My next door neighbor went last weekend to Reno, NV for the "Hot August Nights" event. He told me that he saw one Patrol going into the auction. He didn't stay at that auction, so I had to dig some info from the event.

It sold for $33,000.

Scroll until you find #481 on the following page: https://www.motorsportauctiongroup.com/auction/129

Or if you want to see the pictures and info (not the price) here:

That Patrol was in Hemmings, there's a thread about it here: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4542 . Very worthy of that price, it's good to know the effort put in to the restoration paid off. Very nice. 8-)
