Ya know, that has one of the styles of steel wheel that I was considering for when I rebuild my red Patrol, but after seeing them on this one... ummm, maybe not.

I'm probably going to get in trouble again, but when a guy throws up pictures of shiny paint, and says in his add that the vehicle was "fully restored to look and run great" but doesn't say what he did to make it run great makes me think he didn't do much. shiny new paint is nice, but i would rather talk about engine rebuilds, transmission and transfer case opened inspected and repaired, new wheel bearings, brake cylinders and pads, along with new springs and shocks.

for what he is asking on his price, I would expect to see all that done.

if it was done, that was a bad omission on the add. but i am betting, he is looking for a newbie that likes shiny new paint.

You Sir, posess an insight and wisdom that can help many people in the classic car hobby.

In fact, in my 30 or so years hacking around on old cars, the ONE common theme that I have heard over and over again from people who came in, and then promptly left this hobby, is that they got burned by predatory sellers who rely on people to jump in too fast, spend too much, and then can't get out from underneath a particular car that just "looked so beautiful" but was essentially a gift-wrapped pile of old worn out parts...

Function over form - repeat it to yourself over and over again whenever you are looking at an old vehicle.

If it "ran when it was parked" then it doesn't run - Do all the anaysis and research on what it is going to take (and what it is going to cost) to get it running BEFORE you commit one single dollar to the deal.

The brakes are going to need to be overhauled... Period. Always. on EVERY 50 year old vehicle you look at- Even if they were "just done" you are still going to want to dismantle the brake system and make sure everything is clean, flushed out, and operational.

Fuel system - see brake system above - there are only 2 kinds of 50 year old gas tanks out there - those that won't hold gas due to the holes in them, and those that hold really nasty, rusty gas, and constantly clog fuel filters and fuel pumps. Plan to drop the tank, acid clean it, seal the inside (Eastwoods $40 gas tank sealing kit is AWESOME for this), or maybe even replace it if it is too rusty to be saved.

Tires - They always "have 80% tread left", but no one ever says "From when they were installed back in 1986" - Old tires are dangerous tires. plan on replacing them. (the cream colored Patrol on Ebay right now gets high marks in that they forked over the $700 and did the tires before they advertised it... kudos on that.

Based on the vin number, I would say that it is a re-badged 68 sold as a 69 just as two of mine are. It is only about 22 lower on the vin number than my Montana Patrol...

I also like that blue...chromed dash, not so much.
The specs claim V6 engine and 4 speed trans ? The photo shows otherwise.
I agree it's more 68ish...steering wheel, front and rear lights, windshield wipers, etc.

after buying and selling numerous roadsters and Z cars, i sir, have been burned myself. lucky for me, my wife didn't make me give it up when she saw the money pit develop right after the purchase of my very first old Z.

Knock on wood (rubbing my rabbit's foot as I say this) - I've never been burned on the initial purchase- I've always been pretty good at spotting a deal.

Where I always go off the rails is by thinking "This is the one that I'm going to keep forever, cost be damned" and so I throw a ridiculous budget at the project, and end up taking a bath when sellers refuse to pay what I paid for those custom machined, solid gold, $1500 door lock knobs...

"Sure, these cast iron cylinder heads would work just fine if I did a $300 valve job on them, but for $1500, I can have these nifty aluminum cylinder heads that make 40 more horsepower, and will make the car worth exactly $0 more than the iron heads ..."

- Yeah, that's me.
